Mahrez ends Algeria career after World Cup exit
Five-time Premier League winner retires from national team after 2-0 loss to Switzerland in Doha

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has retired from international soccer after his side’s 2-0 World Cup round-of-32 defeat to Switzerland in Doha on December 1, 2022. The five-time Premier League winner leaves the national team with 39 goals in 90 appearances, capping a 15-year international career that defined Algeria’s golden era under Djamel Belmadi. The 32-year-old winger, who won the Premier League with Manchester City in 2021-22 and 2022-23, was substituted in the 79th minute of the World Cup clash, a match Algeria’s press labeled a ‘disaster’ after conceding two late goals.
