Alonso: McLaren may not have the budget for Verstappen
Fernando Alonso is unsure whether McLaren’s budget would allow them to sign Max Verstappen for their hypercar and Le Mans programme.

Fernando Alonso has directly questioned McLaren’s financial viability if Max Verstappen were to join the team. The Spaniard admitted he is unsure whether team principal Zak Brown’s outfit has the funds for such a project and would prefer to continue racing for Aston Martin on the Valkyrie. Alonso’s comments come amid a fierce battle for talent in the WEC, where McLaren is looking to bolster its endurance racing line-up.
The Spaniard did not rule out working with Verstappen in the future but stressed that the team’s current budget could be a major limiting factor. His remarks served as a warning that McLaren risks losing key drivers due to a lack of resources. The situation at McLaren is further complicated by the fact the team is simultaneously developing a hypercar programme and preparing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
