From Benfica to Canada: the architect of Davies and David
Tony Fonseca exchanged the Benfica myth for a promise to his wife and created modern Canadian football.
Tony Fonseca, the former Benfica defender and Portuguese international, is the invisible master of the Canadian football revolution. His promise to his wife took him from Lisbon to North America, where he would design the pipeline that launched Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David. In the 80s, Fonseca wore the Eagles' shirt in a legendary squad, sharing a room with the mythical goalkeeper Manuel Bento.
This elite experience at the Estádio da Luz forged the mentality that he would later take to the other side of the Atlantic, away from the European spotlight but ready to build from scratch. The move to Canada was not out of ambition for fame, but to honor a family commitment. Assuming the role of technical director, Fonseca implemented a rigorous development structure.
