Panthers’ mid-season reckoning looms as Giants roar back
Melton South Panthers must pass a brutal mid-season test against a resurgent Gisborne Giants side to keep their finals hopes alive in the RDFL.
Melton South Panthers are staring down a make-or-break mid-season audit in the Riddell District Football League after the Gisborne Giants returned to winning ways. The Panthers entered the bye week at 4-3, clinging to a finals spot in a congested top six. But the Giants—dismissed as also-rans after a horror start—have won three straight, including a 14-point thumping of Sunbury last weekend.
That surge has pushed them to within a game of the Panthers, who now face a direct challenge to their finals credentials. RDFL standings show the top six separated by just two wins, with ladder spots shifting weekly. The Panthers’ next two fixtures are brutal: a home clash with the Giants this Saturday, followed by a trip to ladder-leaders Macedon.
