Brendan Sorsby enters NFL supplemental draft amid eligibility fight

Facing NCAA gambling issues, the Texas Tech QB bypasses the April draft for a rare late-summer selection.

Brendan Sorsby, a quarterback who played at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech, will apply for the NFL supplemental draft after facing NCAA eligibility issues tied to gambling violations. The move bypasses the traditional April draft and allows teams to bid future draft picks for his rights. Sorsby played at Indiana in 2022, transferred to Cincinnati for the 2023 season, and then moved to Texas Tech for 2024.
His eligibility for the upcoming college season became uncertain after an NCAA investigation into gambling violations, prompting him to seek an alternative path to the NFL. The supplemental draft, a rare mechanism, allows teams to place blind bids using future draft picks. The NFL supplemental draft typically occurs in July.
Teams submit sealed bids corresponding to a round pick; the highest bid wins the player, and that pick is forfeited from the following year's draft. For quarterback-needy teams, Sorsby represents a chance to acquire a dual-threat signal-caller without sacrificing a high 2025 draft selection. Analysts view Sorsby's decision as a direct consequence of the NCAA's heightened enforcement against gambling.
"The league's crackdown is pushing players with murky eligibility into the pro ranks earlier than expected," one draft analyst noted. Sorsby's mobility and starting experience could make him a developmental asset, particularly for teams lacking quarterback depth. Sorsby must first receive approval from the NFL for supplemental draft eligibility, which requires demonstrating a significant change in circumstances.
If granted, teams will submit bids by mid-July. The winning team will absorb his existing NCAA issues but gains a young quarterback ready to compete immediately. Read at ESPN
The supplemental draft is a rarity, and a quarterback with Sorsby's game experience entering it adds a high-upside variable for QB-needy teams. His eligibility limbo also underscores the NCAA's tightening leash on gambling infractions, forcing players toward pro alternatives earlier than planned. Teams can gamble a late-round pick on a mobile passer without the usual April competition.
