Ecuador stuns Germany 2-1, President declares national holiday
La Tri’s historic World Cup knockout berth sparks nationwide celebration after 2-1 upset of four-time champions Germany in Group A.

Ecuador stunned four-time World Cup champions Germany 2-1 in a Group A thriller to secure their first knockout-stage berth since 2006. Goals from Enzo Fernández and Romario Ibarra sealed La Tri’s place in the Round of 16, while Niclas Füllkrug pulled one back for Germany late in stoppage time. The upset triggered immediate nationwide celebrations, prompting President Daniel Noboa to declare a national holiday in honor of the team’s resilience and historic achievement.
The result was sealed in the 43rd minute when Fernández curled a 25-yard strike past Manuel Neuer, doubling Ecuador’s lead after an early opener by Füllkrug. Ibarra added the second in the 58th minute, capping a dominant first half that saw Ecuador control possession and create clear chances. Germany’s late rally, including a 90+3 minute goal, failed to overturn the deficit, leaving them stunned by the defeat.
