Overview
Virgil van Dijk is a Dutch professional footballer who serves as captain of Liverpool FC in the Premier League. Widely regarded as one of the best central defenders of his generation, the 6-foot-4 Breda native joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a then-world-record fee for a defender. Before his Premier League breakthrough, he built his reputation at Celtic, where he won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles and developed into a dominant aerial presence and ball-playing center-back. Van Dijk made his Netherlands senior debut in 2015 and has amassed over 60 caps for Oranje, featuring at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020. His leadership qualities saw him appointed Liverpool captain ahead of the 2023-24 season, succeeding Jordan Henderson. Off the pitch, he is known for his composure and authority at the back, anchoring a defense that helped deliver the club's first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020.
