Joe Root

Joe Root is an English cricketer and one of the defining Test batters of his generation. A right-handed top-order batter and occasional right-arm off-spinner, he represents England internationally and Yorkshire in county cricket. Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Root made his England Test debut in 2012 and later captained the national side. His game is built on timing, placement, and stamina across long innings, with an especially strong record in Test cricket. Root has been a central figure in England’s batting era alongside players such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, and Alastair Cook. He has also been part of England’s white-ball setup, including the team that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Root entered the 2026 English summer still central to England’s Test plans and active for Yorkshire in the County Championship. In late April, he made 96 for Yorkshire against Sussex at Headingley in his first county appearance of the summer, then helped seal Yorkshire’s first County Championship win of the season against Somerset in early May with a four-wicket spell on the final day.
