Lionel Messi is an Argentine professional footballer who currently plays as a forward and captain for MLS club Inter Miami CF. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, Messi rose through Barcelona's famed La Masia academy and spent the majority of his career at FC Barcelona, where he became the club's all-time top scorer and won numerous domestic and European titles. In 2021, he departed Barcelona after financial constraints made a new contract impossible, and he subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. After two seasons in France, Messi signed with Inter Miami in MLS in 2023, where he has continued to influence games with his playmaking and finishing. Internationally, he led Argentina to victory at the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The 2025 MLS season has been a mixed campaign for Inter Miami and Lionel Messi. The team has shown moments of brilliance but has also struggled with consistency, and Messi's availability has been a talking point as he manages a demanding schedule. Inter Miami entered the season as one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference following a strong 2024, but recent results have seen the squad face pressure to maintain its position in the playoff race. Messi's individual contributions remain a focal point, with the Argentine continuing to produce key assists and goals when on the pitch, though the team around him has at times failed to deliver dominant performances.
