Fils’ late surge falls short as Berrettini edges four-set Wimbledon thriller
French prodigy Arthur Fils pushed Matteo Berrettini to the brink before the Italian’s class prevailed in a tight four-set second-round clash at Wimbledon.

Arthur Fils pushed Matteo Berrettini to the edge of a Wimbledon second-round exit before the Italian’s experience and power sealed a 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory on Centre Court. Fils, 20, started nervously against the 28-year-old Berrettini, losing the opening two sets in 86 minutes. The Frenchman’s flat early errors—double faults and backhand shanks—handed Berrettini the first two frames with minimal resistance.
But Fils regrouped in the third set, breaking serve twice to level the match and force a decider. Berrettini, a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2021, responded with controlled aggression in the fourth. He broke Fils at 2-2 and held for 5-3, sealing the win with an ace on his second championship point.
