Kane brace fires England past Croatia in World Cup opener
England’s attacking firepower overwhelmed Croatia despite a two-goal deficit, with Kane, Bellingham and Rashford delivering a statement victory.

England began their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, overcoming an early two-goal deficit to deliver a statement win in Qatar. The match started disastrously for Gareth Southgate’s side, with Joško Gvardiol opening the scoring in the second minute and Ivan Perišić doubling Croatia’s lead within 12 minutes. England’s defense, usually resolute, looked exposed as Croatia controlled the early exchanges.
The backline’s high line, a hallmark of Southgate’s system, was repeatedly breached, forcing Jordan Pickford into early action. Croatia’s midfield, anchored by Luka Modrić, dictated tempo and probed with surgical passing, but their inability to press England’s buildup left gaps for counterattacks. The turning point came just before half-time when pulled one back from the penalty spot after Bukayo Saka was fouled by Domagoj Vida.
