Aguri Suzuki was a Japanese Formula One driver and motorsport personality who became one of the first Japanese drivers to compete at the sport's highest level. Born March 16, 1952, in Tokyo, Suzuki made his F1 debut in 1982 with Team Lotus at Brands Hatch, marking a significant milestone for Japanese motorsport representation in international racing. His F1 career spanned four seasons (1982–1985), during which he competed for Team Lotus, Theodore Racing, and Ligier. Suzuki accumulated 3 World Championship points over 34 Grand Prix entries, with his best finish a sixth-place result at the 1983 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Beyond his driving career, Suzuki was instrumental in developing motorsport in Japan. He established the Aguri Super Prix and helped found Super GT, serving as a team owner in the series with drivers including Takayuki Oishi and Ralph Firman. His contributions to Japanese motorsport earned him recognition as a cultural bridge between Japanese racing culture and global motorsport. Suzuki passed away in March 2024 following a battle with lung cancer, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure who paved the way for future Japanese F1 drivers.
Aguri Suzuki's active Formula One career concluded following the 1985 season. After retiring from professional racing, Suzuki transitioned into team ownership and motorsport administration. His Aguri Racing team competed in Super GT, where he remained influential in Japanese motorsport development until his passing in March 2024. Suzuki is remembered as a foundational figure in Japanese motorsport history, having helped establish pathways for subsequent Japanese drivers to reach international racing circuits.
